Are you a self-employed subcontractor in construction?

CIS Plus is Crest Plus Operations’ contracting solution for individuals that want to work on a self-employed basis in the UK construction industry. To enjoy the benefits of working through CIS Plus you must register for Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) status with HM Revenue & Customs.


The taxation treatment of self-employed individuals changed on 6 April 2014. As a result, any self-employed individual who provides their services via an intermediary such as a recruitment agency or a contracting company like Crest Plus must be treated as employed for tax purposes if anyone exercises control, supervision and direction over them or has the right to do this. What is more, HM Revenue & Customs work on the presumption that this will always be the case unless evidence can be produced to prove otherwise. If the self-employed worker is treated as employed for taxation purposes, this means that income tax and national insurance must be deducted at source under PAYE. In almost every case, that obligation will fall on the recruitment agency involved. For this reason some recruitment agencies refuse to allow self-employed individuals to be engaged on some of the projects they are involved with. Unfortunately if and when that happens, CIS Plus will not be available to you. However, our Umbrella Plus and Personal Service Company propositions may provide attractive alternative ways for you to undertake the work in question.

Crest Plus Operations is our company and we will engage you as one of our self-employed subcontractors, provided you successfully pass our initial screening process which is designed to indicate whether you are able to work on a self-employed basis.

Being self-employed gives you the freedom to manage your own affairs. You can work as and when you choose. With freedom comes responsibility. So, you will be responsible for completing an annual self-assessment tax return and paying any income tax and national insurance that is due. You will, therefore, need to budget and make provision for this from what you receive. Most of our CIS Plus self-employed subcontractors are actually due a refund back from HM Revenue & Customs.

If you wish, we can prepare your self-assessment tax return for you and deal with the associated paper work. We have a dedicated team that specialise in just this and they will use their experience to help you optimise your earnings.

Our streamlined registration process is designed to make life easy for you. You can register with us over the telephone during normal office hours, but more and more of our CIS Plus subcontractors are finding it more convenient to register online.

When you carry out work for us under CIS Plus you will have the benefit of the extensive insurance cover that we carry for ourselves and our subcontractors.
